Gillian (Gill) Hobbs is a co-founder and principal of Governance West Inc. She brings to the
company thirty years of experience related to governance, strategic management and human
resources management gained in industry, education and government in Canada and
internationally.
Currently, Gill is a member of the Board of ABC Benefits Corporation which governs Alberta
Blue Cross, as well as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board and a past member of
the Audit Committee. She is a Past President of the Calgary Chapter of The Strategic Leadership
Forum; and a member and past executive of the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Human
Resource Planners. She serves as a teaching resource on board effectiveness, strategic planning
and human resource management and is a part-time faculty member of the Canadian Petroleum
Institute.
As a consultant since 1994, Gill has assisted boards and management teams to assess, develop
and align:
Governance models and linkage to culture development
Roles and accountabilities,
Organization structures,
Leadership development and succession planning,
Strategic direction setting, strategy development, resource allocation and performance evaluation,
Frameworks and schedules for board/management linkage and interaction.
Clients have included both large and small organizations from publicly-traded, public service and
non-profit sectors. In recent assignments, Gill has helped several clients to develop a clear
understanding of board and committee roles, the role of the individual board member, and the
CEO role. She has developed selection criteria for chair and CEO positions, and co-developed
Governance West's self-assessment tool for boards. Gill often facilitates board and management
meetings on various governance topics.
Prior to establishing her consulting practice, Gill spent fourteen years with Petro-Canada where
she participated on the leadership team that planned and conducted the privatization of the
corporation, and developed the corporation's investor relations function. Gill also held the
positions of Senior Director of Corporate Development and Director of Human Resources
Planning and Development at the corporation. Earlier in her career, Gill served as a counselling
consultant and director of a federal government employment equity training and development
program operating in Canada's northern territories, as a personnel officer in the United Kingdom,
and as a teaching master and counsellor in a post-secondary college in Ontario.
Gill Hobbs completed undergraduate honours studies in Psychology at the University of Western
Ontario, a clinical internship in psychology at the London Psychiatric Hospital, received a Master
of Education (Administration) degree from Queen's University, and completed the Stanford
Executive Program.
